In 1936 the circus [?] to Britain, but while it [?] here, my great- grandfather [?] a very bad accident and he [?] both his legs. He [?] in hospital for a long time and the circus [?] to the USA without him. While he [?] in the hospital he [?] in love with his nurse, Alice. They [?], and she [?] my great- grandmother.

When he [?] of hospital my great- grandfather [?] a job in a factory. The Second World War [?] in 1939 and he [?] the air force, but his plane [?] in France and he [?] a prisoner of war there for two years. Then he [?].

After the war he [?] to go back to the USA, but my great- grandmother [?] to leave Britain, so he [?] a job as a train driver. He [?] about five years ago, so I can still remember him. He [?] me lots of stories about his life.
